I found out how to remove the dash board pad of my 1971 squareback. The biggest lesson that I learned from this was that dash removal is not required for speaker replacement. :-) To remove my dash, I had to first remove a few other bits. I used a screwdriver to pry off the chrome strip along the bottom of the dash. Don't worry, there are little spring clips that pop right out. This exposed a number of Phillips head screws which connected the lower edge of the dash cover to the car body. Out with the screws. There are also single screws at the top left and top right corners of the dash, near the lower corners of the windshield. Out with these guys, too. What? It won't come off yet? Ahhh, the passenger grab-handle. Unbolt the metal strip that supports the glove box. Sliding the glove box forward a bit (Front is Front) exposed the grab handle's mounting bolts. Off with the handle. What's this? Still connected? Oh, the gauges. Remove the gauges. Now the dash is free. Wasn't that simple? -Greg gregm@vwtype3.org
