Soap and a little water is even better. Some rubber compounds don't 
like petroleum. You'd think they wouldn't use such compounds on cars, 
but note the rubber gasket under the oil filler pipe; that's the 
perfect place for an oil tolerant rubber, but VW didn't think to use 
one there. That's why yours, and everyone else's, is swollen and 
damaged.
